Nouveau BullITen – Issue #1 – IT News Bulletin

Welcome to the first issue of Nouveau’s Nouveau BullITin (that’s a ‘bulletin’, but with more focus on IT). In these weekly posts we aim to roundup relevant IT news all in one place so that you can stay up to date with the latest information concerning IT security and cloud without having to do much searching around on the web. We understand that it can be hard to stay up-to date with all the latest pieces of news, so hopefully these posts are a convenient way of getting a good gist of what’s going on in the world of IT.

AWS: Your complete guide to Amazon Web Services & features

We stumbled across this post by Tech Radar a few days ago and thought it might be worth a share. This article conveniently puts together the features of Amazon Web Services into one place – when you look at it all in a list, you realise just how much there is to cloud services like AWS and Azure.

New Microsoft Browser Combats Crypto Mining Malware

On Bitcoinest, we learned that in Microsoft’s new version of the Edge Browser there will be features to prevent crypto-mining malware that will be superior to SmartScreen (a cloud based anti-malware component in many of Microsoft’s software).
An interesting part of the article involves the late basketball legend Kobe Bryant – hackers were using a wallpaper of him to infect machines with malware. You can learn more about it in the article.

Be wary of hotel cyber security, experts tell agents

According to data from Statista, food and hospitality organisations had only invested an average of £1080 in internet security during 2019.
Considering we live in a world where we can work from anywhere and everywhere, it might be sensible to consider what networks we join when we stay away, according to this post from TTGMedia.

Sonos exposed some customers’ email addresses in BCC apology gaffe

If you own a Sonos, we are sure you might have heard about the company cancelling support on a variety of older products – it’s caused quite a stir in the world of audio entertainment.
In lamens terms, because of the lack of support it means the old dusty speaker in the image above will work as it did when it was released, where as many Sonos products will not.
On top of that, they also made a blunder that breaches GDPR regulations.
Sonos emailed hundred of customers by accidently CC’ing them into an apology email (referencing the cancellation of support). It just goes to show that user training is just as important as processes and technology. You can read the original article here on Trusted Reviews.

What is your job role here at Nouveau?

Senior Business Development Manager – Proactive Security Managed Services

    What attracted you to Nouveau?

I joined Nouveau as they are an extremely agile and innovative technology provider, and I see great potential in the services they deliver that will help organisations who are struggling to keep up with the growing number of cyber security threat vectors and increasing complexity.

How long have you been in the industry & what interests you about the IT industry?

For more years than I care to mention! Cyber is, in my humble opinion, the fastest moving and exciting facet of the IT industry, changing weekly, daily and even hourly – getting a sense of satisfaction out of the fact that you are keeping both businesses, and the public as a whole, safe from the bad guys is a great feeling!

If you could have three dinner guests, who would they be and why?

    What a great question!

Stephen Fry for his quick wit and sublime personality, Angela Hartnett for cooking tips and bubbly personality and last but by no means least my lovely wife, Adele, because I wouldn’t hear the last of it if I didn’t…

Tell us an obscure and interesting fact about yourself

In 2016 I walked with lions on Christmas morning in Senegal.

    What is your favourite hobby?

Cooking and travelling (we actually choose holiday destinations by the food).

    Nouveau Christmas Newsletter 2019

Well, this year went quickly, didn’t it!

As we approach Christmas and get ready to say goodbye to 2019 and hello to 2020, we thought we would take some time to review some of the biggest milestones within Nouveau this year.

Fortinet Collaboration Partner of the Year Award

Our first award of the year was the Fortinet Collaborative Partner of the Year Award 2019. We have been close partners with Fortinet for over 15 years, so it was a huge honour to have a contribution recognised and valued.

    Awards Finalists

We were also shortlisted for the Best New Business Win award at the CRN Sales & Marketing Awards back in July and Best Tech SME at the Thames Valley Tech Awards in September. Unfortunately, we didn’t come away with a win but it was an honour to be shortlisted.

    Retaining ISO27001

Retaining ISO27001 is important to us as it demonstrates that we know how to deal with sensitive information. We retained the certification with flying colours thanks to the hard work put in by everyone, but especially our Operations Manager, Mark Lloyd.

Retention of Microsoft Gold Cloud Competency, Fortinet Platinum Partner including NSE8, SentinelOne Gold Partner

We are proud to have retained all our vendor partnership statuses, including keeping our brilliant NSE8 qualified engineer. We are always looking to enhance our skills and continue to grow our competencies with Microsoft and SentinelOne. Thank you to the team for making this all possible!

Investment in Security Operations Team to enhance proactive monitoring

Due to the increase in demand for proactive monitoring services across the industry, we have decided to take a step forward from their already high-quality solution. From what was once integrated as part of our technical team, we have established a dedicated Advanced Monitoring Team that will control and oversee all aspects of proactive security monitoring.

    Charitable endeavours

Throughout the year, we have tried our best to give back to the community by supporting a variety of charities that hit close to home. We have supported the MIND charity, Kidney Research UK, MacMillan Cancer Support, Mecenat Chirurgie Cardiaque, Movember and more.

All in all, 2019 was a great year for Nouveau. We are excited to go into the new decade with high hopes and the ambition to continue to grow and improve our business as a whole. Thank you to all of our customers and partners for showing continued support – we wish you all a very Merry Christmas.

Meet the panelists – Minimise your risk in the cybersecurity threat landscape webinar

Minimise your risk in the cybersecurity threat landscape webinar

    Meet The Panelists

By now, we hope you have heard about our upcoming webinar that we are running in partnership with CyberCrowd. On the 26th Novemeber at 10:00am GMT, we will be focussing on how your organisation can Minimise your risk in the cybersecurity threat landscape, featuring stories and advice from our team of experts.

We thought it would be a good idea to give you the opportunity to get to know the team a little better. After all, cybersecurity isn’t just about the technology – it’s about the people and processes, too!

So, without further ado, introducting our trio of panelists.

    Andy Strangeways

Lead CISO at CyberCrowd and Cyber Security Evangelist

“Cyber security exists in the service of an organisation’s mission, not the other way round. Industry frameworks such as ISO27001/2 and NIST 800-53 give consideration to pretty much every conceivable measure you could take to control information risks, but it’s rarely the best choice for the organisation to implement every detail of their recommendations, especially in smaller businesses. In today’s world where cyber security threats crop up everywhere, all the time, the challenge is to figure out which selection of measures will give the best protection from a limited budget and finite resources, and to keep adapting and improving those measures as your business and the threat landscape evolve. Experience across a wide range of organisations suggests that culture and behaviour is more important here than any technical IT security solution.”

    Janine Gill

Computing Women in IT Excellence Awards 2019 Finalist, Client Director at CyberCrowd

“The world of cyber security is probably the fastest moving industry area I have worked in, during my 15 year career within IT.  One of the most common challenges we see within our customer base is at the initial point of contact.  I think there is now a realisation across the business community that measures need to be put in place to mitigate against the risk of breach or cyber-attack, but “What is it that businesses need to do and how do they start?”  are the questions I am approached with most often.  At CyberCrowd, we get to know your business in order to be able to relate to our industry expertise, so we can offer support and guidance that is fit for purpose for your business.”

    Ian Johnson

Business Development Manager, Security Division at Nouveau

“I’ve worked in the IT/Cyber Security marketplace for over 15 years and during this time I’ve seen many changes. One element that has been consistent throughout are the frustrations felt within IT Management Teams. This is down to the lack of information available at Exec level to align both the business and security strategies. At Nouveau we’ve reacted to this challenge by creating our Security LifeCycle proposition. Starting with Assess (stage 1 of the lifecycle) we can engage to share the knowledge and design services to support the business and security strategies required. We will be discussing the current threat landscape and real case scenarios to help you understand your security posture.”

    More about the webinar

As we said earlier, it’s not just about technology, it’s also about people and processes.

An effective security strategy should incorporate these three things seamlessly in order to mitigate security threats to the best possible standards. That’s why Nouveau have partnered with Cyber Crowd to help deliver a range of services including a Security Posture Review.

In this webinar, we hope to provide you with an insight into how to overcome challenges associated with building an effective security strategy.

What will you gain from attending?
    • Insight into current security threat landscape
    • Understanding of services available to improve security knowledge of your business
    • Align your organisation to industry leading standards
    • Information from leading security specialists

We hope at the end of the webinar you will come away with a better understanding of what steps you might need to take in order to improve your organisation’s security posture.

“Minimise your risk in the cybersecurity threat landscape” webinar

Cyber Security doesn’t have to be all about the latest vendor buzzwords – it’s not about scaremongering. It’s about understanding the risks to your business and having the tools available in order to manage those risks. It is something everyone needs to take time to understand, including all levels of management.

In this webinar (view the recording here), we hope to provide you with an insight into how to overcome challenges associated with building an effective security strategy.

” Being responsible for IT in an organisation which is very tech dependant is a real challenge, especially having no formal IT experience myself.  Having the Nouveau team at the end of the phone is a real-life saver and I have needed a life line many times.  I most appreciate the accessibility, knowledge and friendliness of the team. “

” The company I work for has been using Nouveau Solutions for the past 15+ years and I have had the pleasure myself to build up a good, close relationship with them for about 12 of those years.

Nouveau Solutions have dedicated teams for each different area that are made up of very knowledgeable technicians and engineers that specialise in their specific area of expertise. It is due to this that I always feel confident that Nouveau Solutions will be able to deliver us any IT services that we may request from them (there has been a lot over the years).

They have always gone above and beyond to deliver high quality professional IT services to meet any requirements that we throw at them within any timeframes that we may set.

On top of the ad-hoc IT services we request from Nouveau Solutions, they also monitor, manage, maintain and support some of our network infrastructure and have always been on hand to resolve any issues that may be noticed via their monitoring or raised by us within a timely manner.

We also purchase the majority of our IT equipment including hardware, software and licensing through Nouveau Solutions which is always at a reasonable price and always received within a timely manner.

Since day one of our relationship with Nouveau Solutions we have been appointed to the same one account manager which has allowed him to get to know our business very well. The service that has been provided by him to us has been nothing but exceptional. He always comes across as knowledgeable in any business discussions that we may have and has always been happy to take the time to communicate with us, make us aware of anything that we need to be aware of, or provide us with updates on anything.  I have always had the impression that his main priority is to ensure that we are happy with everything that Nouveau Solutions provides to us and he will do anything to ensure that is the case.

All in all, I have nothing but praise to offer for Nouveau Solutions and would highly recommend them to any company that was looking for an IT services company.  There are definitely no plans here to switch to a different IT services company for the foreseeable future.

Here’s to many more years with using Nouveau Solutions! “

” Nouveau have been brilliant from start to finish – very professional and competitive with their service and pricing. We needed a large number of Firewalls to deploy across our global company over a very short time period and thanks to Jack’s excellent availability, Nouveau’s turn-around time was extremely swift, even with nearly no notice. Nouveau not only provided us with the hardware  – one of their competent technicians supplied us with some design work in the past to help with our data centre firewalls replacement project! Nouveau have been great to work with. “

” In the summer of 2017, I approached Nouveau in the hope of finding a competent partner that could help us through an upcoming hardware refresh. A priority of ours was to discover a local business (within 20 miles) that excelled and specialised in HPE, Dell, Fortinet and Microsoft/Office 365 as we planned to refresh our whole core infrastructure,. This included storage, infrastructure hosting and networking (core, access and perimeter) for our headquarters and our other branches. After an extensive phase of speccing, detail planning and quoting, Andy Swain and his team were able to offer a “spot on” solution for our demands with a very high cost/value ratio. This project led to a very open and trusting partnership with Nouveau and made them our No.1 partner within IT. “
